On April 24, 2024, Luke Liss, the Pro Bono Partner at Wilson Sonsini, was honored with the esteemed Alfred J. Chiplin, Jr. Social Justice & Advocacy Award by the Center for Medicare Advocacy. This distinguished recognition, named after the Center's former managing attorney Alfred J. Chiplin, Jr., is an annual tribute to individuals committed to fostering civility and advocating for social justice.
Luke’s receipt of the award underscores Wilson Sonsini's longstanding partnership with the Center, which has resulted in a series of groundbreaking legal triumphs with far-reaching implications for Medicare beneficiaries.
As an example, Luke and the dedicated pro bono team at Wilson Sonsini, collaborating with the Center for Medicare Advocacy and co-counsel Justice in Aging, successfully secured appeal rights for Medicare beneficiaries facing the intricate challenge of hospitalization classification, which can affect the right to Medicare coverage for often critical care. This achievement introduces a vital safeguard that was previously lacking.
In his acceptance speech, Luke reflected, "Engaging in this work is truly a blessing, not only in terms of experience but also emotionally and spiritually." He expressed appreciation to managing partner Doug Clark and Katie Martin, chair of Wilson Sonsini’s board of directors, for their outstanding leadership and steadfast support, and recognized the numerous firm employees actively participating in pro bono and community service endeavors across Wilson Sonsini’s offices. Luke closed by underscoring the importance of belonging to the Wilson Sonsini family.
