Daily Journal Names Vanessa Bryant Win as Top Verdict of 2022
The Daily Journal recognized Vanessa Bryant's victory in her privacy and federal civil rights suit against the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department as a top verdict (Bryant v. County of Los Angeles et al.). Wilson Sonsini acted as counsel to Vanessa Bryant in the litigation matter, with Luis Li and Eric P. Tuttle leading the firm’s team along with co-counsel Craig Lavoie and Jennifer Bryant from Munger, Tolles & Olson.
The trial in the lawsuit by Vanessa Bryant against the county of Los Angeles focused on the graphic photographs from the scene of the 2020 helicopter crash that killed her husband, Kobe Bryant, and daughter, Gianna Bryant, as well as several others. Bryant and the County of Los Angeles reached a $28.85 million settlement of all claims, including the $15 million awarded to Vanessa Bryant by a jury in August 2022.
Wilson Sonsini litigation partner and lead trial attorney Luis Li emphasized that the case was always about accountability. "That was always, always the objective," he said. He, his client, and co-counsel wanted to ensure "that people were held accountable for the very specific actions that they took and the words that they said."
